Jehovah’s Witnesses banned in Tajikistan TAJIKISTAN — On October 11, 2007, the Assembly of the Council Commission of the Ministry of Culture issued a decision to ban Jehovah’s Witnesses in the Republic of Tajikistan. The 600 Jehovah’s Witnesses in the country view this action as discriminatory in nature, since no other faiths have faced such a ban. Citing reasons for the ban, an official from the Ministry of Culture stated that the authorities’ main complaint was that Jehovah’s Witnesses refuse military service. He added that they also propagate their faith in public places, which, he said, directly violates the law. Saidbek Mahmudolloev, the head of the Information Department at the Culture Ministry’s Religious Affairs Department, stated that “there is no alternative service in Tajikistan yet, so everyone ought to obey Tajik laws.” This decision comes quite unexpectedly, since Jehovah’s Witnesses have enjoyed legal recognition in the country since 1994. “For the past 14-year period, the Religious Affairs Committee and the authorities in Tajikistan have usually been cooperative in trying to arrive at mutually acceptable solutions,” notes V. Adyrchayev, Chairman of the Religious Association of Jehovah’s Witnesses of the City of Dushanbe. He added that “even under the Soviet Union, Jehovah’s Witnesses in Tajikistan were treated with tolerance and understanding.” The Witnesses consider the ban as a violation of the constitutional rights of religious believers as well as of the State’s obligations to its international agreements. Another representative of Jehovah’s Witnesses stated: “Our people will be watching to see how aggressively the authorities try to impose this ban. We don’t know if the security police will begin to break up meetings. But the Constitution guarantees the freedom to meet with others and to share your views.” Plans for appealing the decision are already being pursued. In a letter to Mr. E. Rahmon, the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, Jehovah’s Witnesses expressed the hope that he “objectively and justly consider the question of the lawfulness of the decision to ban the association of Jehovah’s Witnesses” and requested that he reverse the decision of the Ministry of Culture. Following the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and after the breakup of the Soviet Union, the activity of Jehovah’s Witnesses was legally recognized by many post-Soviet republics. Since that time, however, this is the first Soviet republic to ban the activity of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Contacts: Gregory Olds, telephone: Manuteção de Salão do Reino, congr. Mariléia, Austin , Rio de Janeiro. Witnessing to the Moslem community takes a lot of T: trust, tact, and trying hard. We need to completely trust in Jehovah for guidance (some of them perceived Witnesses as just “another Christian trying to antagonize us” so we need to rely on the power beyond what is normal when oppose); tact so as not to offend them (but to find a common ground); and trying hard because we really need to try, and try, until their circumstances change, until they open their mind to Scriptural truths, until their heart is enlightened, until they understand us better, until Armageddon comes. Without them knowing that it’s a Bible study, we’re now studying the brochure: “The Guidance of God — Our Way to Paradise.” Please allow this Moslem girl to narrate how she met the Witnesses and how she appreciated their Scriptural teachings. http://gobleth.multiply.com/journal/item/16/Sudanese_Moslem_writes_a_paper_about_Jehovahs_Witnesses Reflection Paper on Jehovah’s Witnesses My family and Islamic beliefs trained me not to judge people and to love my neighbors. This salient teaching of Quoran is deeply engraved in my heart and mind especially when I decided to study in a foreign land called the Just imagine what a direct and dramatic drop in human rights violations there would be around the world if all people took this stand today and ‘learned war no more’! Individual Witnesses do not disdain the culture of others. Neither do those who become Witnesses reject the culture in which they were reared, unless it disagrees with the principles in the Bible. In such cases they make changes in their lives. They recognize that in every culture there are praiseworthy features. If all people on earth would be able to show such intense love for one another, then there would be no wars, no ethnic strife, no theft, no killings, genocide or any conflict. Our world would have been a peaceful place to live in. Fortunately, their worldwide Bible educational program clears racial and ethnic barriers and crumbles the walls of nationalism by teaching the Bible’s view of race: There is only one race—the human race. (Acts 17:26) As a result of this Bible-based education, millions of people today do not “learn war any more.” The intellectually stimulating conversations I have with them make me realize that there are many similarities between the Bible and Quran. Christians and Moslems are taught to love and respect their God and neighbors. If people would only seriously pay attention to the valuable lessons of these Holy Books, then the human race will be united as one happy, peaceful family. So the next time Jehovah’s Witnesses knock on my door, I would be happy to let them in. Because I find an ally in my long quest for prosperity and world peace.

The early morning darkness could not hide the excitement of building day. “Well everybody just wants to help, young and old, everybody wants to do something,” says volunteer Ruth Hein.
It has taken weeks of planning, but after a hearty breakfast, some morning coffee and help from the sun, the work day started with a bang.
Two months ago, arson turned the Jehovah’s Witness Kingdom Hall into nothing but charred brick and rubble. Police believe two 15 year olds started the fire. However, even though their loss was devastating, church members say there are no hard feelings.
Now they are looking toward the future. About 200 volunteers showed up this morning and more are expected throughout the week.
The project should be finished by Sunday.
