New Jersey congregations of Jehovah’s Witnesses will travel to Reading, Pa., this weekend for their annual convention. This year’s theme is “Guided by God’s Spirit.” The three-day program will feature Bible-based talks, skits, interviews, baptism and a costume Bible drama that focus on Jesus Christ’s promise to his followers that God’s holy spirit would provide reliable guidance. Jehovah’s Witnesses believe that the Bible is a product of God’s holy spirit and that people should read it regularly for practical advice and wisdom that is unmatched. The program begins at 9:20 a.m. each day and resumes around 1:30 p.m. after intermission. More than 20,000 Witnesses are projected to attend during eight weekends at the Sovereign Center at 700 Penn St. The public is invited to attend all or part of the convention. Witnesses from Pennsylvania, Maryland and Delaware will be in attendance. Each day’s program will share specific examples of how children and adults can follow the leadings of God’s spirit at school, work, within the family circle and congregation, during social activities and when alone or participating in the Christian ministry. Saturday’s highlight is the baptism of newly ordained members. The program will emphasize how God’s spirit operates in the ministry work and personal life. On Sunday, there will be a fast-moving series of talks that examines the nine qualities, referred to as “fruitages of the spirit,” that give evidence that one is being led by God’s spirit. The highly-anticipated full-costume drama leads off the final afternoon session http://www.courierpostonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080620/GETPUBLISHED/806190398/1069/ENT • The people: Witnesses are members of a worldwide Christian religion who actively share with others information about God, whose name is Jehovah, and about his son, Jesus Christ. They view first-century Christianity as their model. • The Bible: It is God’s infallible, inspired word. However, some portions of the Bible are to be understood figuratively; or symbolically. • God: Jehovah, the creator of all things, is worthy of worship and devotion. His outstanding qualities are love, justice, wisdom and power. • Jesus: He is the son of God. He came to Earth from heaven and gave his perfect human life as a ransom sacrifice. His death and resurrection made salvation to eternal life possible for those exercising faith in him. • Interaction with society: Jehovah’s Witnesses are found in all levels of society. However, they strive to avoid prejudices and controversies. Although not ascetics, they avoid being excessive in the pursuit of wealth, pleasure or prominence. • Family life: Witnesses view marriage as a serious, lifelong commitment. Parents should teach children scriptural values and provide loving discipline. They believe the Bible does not condone harsh physical punishment. • Other beliefs: While the church’s opposition to blood transfusions is well-documented, the church does not oppose all medical intervention. • Spreading beliefs: The door-to-door visitation for which the church is known stems from a desire by each congregation to visit all the people in a neighborhood at least once a year with a Bible-based message. Contacts are also made on street corners, in parks and at other public places. • Stance on war: While the church recognizes the authority of nations to raise armies and defend themselves, members are expected to follow the example of Jesus and early Christians and refrain from participating in the wars and politics of the various nations. They firmly believe they must beat their swords into plowshares. OGDEN — An estimated 11,000 Jehovah’s Witnesses from Utah and several surrounding states will gather at the Dee Events Center the next two weekends for their 2008 District Convention. For the second year in a row, a separate Spanish-language-only convention will be part of the program. The Spanish Jehovah’s Witnesses Convention will begin at 9:20 a.m. Friday. There’s a lunch break about 12:15 p.m., and then sessions resume at 1:30 p.m. That also will be the schedule for June 28 and 29. Then, from July 4 through July 6, the English-language conference will be held, using the same daily schedule. According to Warren Beers, an elder in the Millcreek Jehovah’s Witnesses, who is helping organize this year’s convention in Ogden, the English event is expected to attract at least 7,000 people. That’s down from recent years, but there are another 4,000 or more who will attend the Spanish version, and until 2007, they all attended the same convention. “Guided by God’s Spirit” is the theme of this year’s conventions nationwide, and Jehovah’s Witnesses enthusiastically invite the public to attend any or all of their conference sessions. “It’s hard to find guidance today that doesn’t change,” Beers said. “We’re excited about this year’s conventions. They are the high point of our year spiritually.” Jeff Tackett, another elder, said this year’s theme is particularly relevant because of the uncertain economy and world turmoil. “Follow the Christ” was the convention’s 2007 theme, and “Jehovah’s Role” was the 2006 focus. This year’s convention will explain why humans need reliable guidance and how God’s holy spirit provides it. The convention theme will develop Jesus Christ’s assurance to his followers, as recorded at John 16:13, that God’s spirit will guide them. Other key texts that will be discussed at the convention include Jeremiah 10:23, Romans 8:6 and Galatians 5:16. Beers also said the Friday afternoon sessions will focus on teenagers, with the title, “Young People — Walk by Holy Spirit.” The Sunday afternoon session will feature a Bible drama, presented live and in full costume. Dan Wilde, a Jehovah’s Witness from Vernal, has been attending the annual conventions in Ogden for a decade. He said one of the best things about the gatherings is having so many church members together in the same place. “We get some great instruction, too. It’s an event we all look forward to” and one that energizes the Witnesses to live better lives, he said. Francisco Montano is helping organize the Spanish-only convention in Ogden. He said last year’s inaugural convention attracted 5,500 people — far more than was hoped for. The decrease to about 4,000 people this year is because a boundary change means some Colorado Witnesses will be going to conventions there. Otherwise, Witnesses from most of Utah, some of southern Idaho, western Wyoming and eastern Nevada will attend the conferences at the Dee Events Center. “We received a lot of good comments” about last year’s Spanish convention, Montano said. He also said that as Ogden-area residents mingled with Jehovah’s Witnesses in local restaurants, some did ask for more information about their faith. Despite the drop in Utah convention attendance, Montano said the growth in Utah Jehovah’s Witnesses Spanish-speaking congregations is up 20 percent over a year ago, rising from 1,600 members to 1,900 now. The Utah Jehovah’s Witnesses Convention has been held at the Dee Events Center, 4450 Harrison Blvd., for almost 30 years. There will be a total of 305 Witnesses conventions in 76 cities in the United States this summer. Conventions will be held in English, as well as 15 other languages, including American Sign Language. There is no admission fee or collection taken at any convention or meeting of Jehovah’s Witnesses. There are nearly 7 million Witnesses associated with more than 101,000 congregations worldwide.
Arabic speakers extend Jehovah’s Witnesses’ reachArticle Created: 06/18/2008 05:03:42 PM PDT
BURLINGAME — A quote from the Book of Exodus is scrawled in Arabic: “Stand still and see the salvation of Jehovah.” The message is truth to the Jehovah’s Witnesses who attended service at Our Kingdom Hall on Sunday morning. They all speak Arabic. Many are fluent, as it is their native tongue, while others are learning the Semitic language. The small congregation — established in 1997 — has a large reach. From Marin County to Monterey, its 55 members focus on converting Arabs with ties to the Muslim or Christian faiths. “In our belief, not all Christians do God’s will,” said Emad Salih of Menlo Park, a former Muslim. “There is only one true religion doing God’s will, and that’s the Jehovah’s Witnesses.” Salih was born and raised in Iraq. He moved to the United States in 1993. While living in Los Angeles, Salih was approached by a Jehovah’s Witness from Egypt. After studying with him for four months, Salih said he found something in the faith. He was baptized three years later. In July, members are expected to attend the annual Arabic District Convention of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Norco. Some have already attended the 2008 district convention at the Cow Palace, which meets every weekend from now until Aug. 17. Lamar Bingham of South San Francisco was one of the founding members of the Burlingame congregation at 2828 Trousdale Drive. The 78-year-old and his wife were missionaries in Lebanon from 1951 to 1985. Their mission became difficult in 1975 when civil war broke out — but it didn’t stop them.Even today, their need to reach out and share the Bible with people has not dimmed. “People need comfort from God’s word now,” Bingham said. “We’re not interested in bringing them a new religion. We present what the Bible said, then they’ll be in the position to decide.” For the last 15 years, Jehovah’s Witnesses have reached out to communities where there are large concentrations of ethnic groups. Witnesses learn Portuguese, Russian, French, Mandarin, Punjabi, and American Sign Language. And in Burlingame, the congregation offers Arabic classes. “We reach out to people,” said Bingham, who cited a passage in the Book of Matthew. “Good news of the kingdom will be preached. Everybody should hear what God says he’s going to do.” Bingham said similarities between the Muslim and Jehovah’s Witness faith include the belief that God is the supreme creator; that there are no religious images; and that Jesus Christ was born of the Virgin Mary. Anthony Smith and his wife LoRain of San Mateo were Witnesses who attended the English-speaking congregation. When they heard Arabic classes were going to be offered, they jumped at the chance. The Smiths have taken three classes and gone through informal training. “We had a desire to want people to come to know the God of the Bible whose name is Jehovah,” said Anthony Smith, 49. Bingham — who grew up Mormon — is heartened that some people in the Arabic community of about 150,000 in the Bay Area are open to a conversation. Samir Dahbour of South San Francisco agrees. Dahbour was born and raised a Roman Catholic in Jerusalem. The 62-year-old was baptized as a Witness in 1984. He helped Bingham start the Arabic group, which was originally a part of the English-speaking Jehovah’s Witnesses. Dahbour said he devotes his weekends to going to people’s homes. Often, he makes return visits. “It takes a lot of time and effort,” Dahbour said. “Hopefully, in the future, they will strengthen their faith, and come to the point where they can dedicate themselves in baptism.” |
