To the Editor:
There are several reasons why Christians cannot believe in evolution that were not mentioned in the editorial, “A Different Conversation about Creation” [Centre View, July 20-26].
The foremost reason is that if there were no literal Adam and Eve and we evolved from primates after millions of years of evolution, there would be no reason for a redeemer, no reason for Christ to be the atonement sacrifice of what Adam lost. I Corinthians 15:45 — “It is even so written: “The first man Adam became a living soul.” The last Adam became a life-giving spirit.”
Furthermore, if the Bible is to be viewed as a collection of good, interesting stories, then the Bible loses its place as Sacred Writings. Anyone’s story is just as good as biblical stories. II Timothy 3:16, 17 relates that “All Scripture is inspired of God and beneficial for teaching, for reproving for settings things straight, for disciplining in righteousness, that the man of God may be fully competent, completely equipped for every good work.” There was mention of two different accounts of creation in Genesis chapters 1 and 2. A very close study would show not two different accounts but complementary versions of creation. The understanding that God created everything in 24-hour periods or seven days is not a reasonable conclusion to the Genesis account. If God had not yet created our solar system, why would He be bound by a 24-hour cycle pertinent to our earth’s rotation. Nowhere in Genesis are these seven days stated as 24-hour cycles. A day can mean a longer period of time such as in the phrase: “In my father’s day…” The Bible cannot be interpreted literally in every circumstance. Restricting understanding of what the Bible says to a very narrow construct is what has caused many to view Biblical accounts as good stories.
The third reason is the growing body of knowledge about DNA. Scientists refer to our first human ancestress as mitochondrial Eve. Interesting that we are all descendants of one female and not many females as one would suppose if evolution had been responsible. DNA is called the blueprint of the species. If it is not in your DNA to fly, you don’t fly or speak or walk or reason. The term “irreducible complexity” comes to mind when considering the intricacy of cellular structure or the universe. From the micro to the macro, “for His invisible qualities are clearly seen from the world’s creation onward, because they are perceived by the things made, even his eternal power and Godship so that they are inexcusable; because although they knew God they did not glorify him as God nor did they thank him, but they became empty-headed in their reasonings and their unintelligent heart became darkened.” (Romans 1:20,21) Hebrews 3:4 relates that “Of course every house is constructed by someone, but he that constructed all things is God.”
There is no room for evolution according to the Bible. The Biblical account of creation and the theory of evolution are contradictory views. Ask a person to build you something without a blueprint, better yet ask someone to build you something with a blueprint. Achieving a desired result is difficult at best. Yet evolution tells us that all the wonder of everything we see and can’t physically see but intellectually comprehend came about with no direction and yet works together perfectly. To me, belief in evolution is like seeing an accident involving an auto parts truck and expecting a Ferrari as a result. Not only a Ferrari but one that reproduces itself. How likely an event is that? Life did not come about by accident, but by design. Ferrari puts a logo on its cars to differentiate them from other brands. We can distinguish a Rolls Royce, Mercedes, Jaguar, etc., by their design. Yet, many won’t apply the same logic to who designed the trees, the stars, the universe. Would it be easier if He had stamped everything with a label designed by God, the Almighty? Psalms 83:18 — “That people may know that you whose name is Jehovah, You alone are the Most High over all the earth.” Christians know there is no room for any explanation of creation other than God, Jehovah God author of all.
